“To hell with
circumstances. I create opportunities.” – Bruce Lee
A few years ago while
living in Los Angeles I received an unexpected phone call from an old friend
back in New York. “Since you’re out in L.A. and your apartment here is empty, I
was wondering if it’d be okay to shoot a little short film I wrote,” she said. I
happily obliged impressed at her initiative and determination to create her own
opportunities.
We spoke regularly on the
phone during her production and I could tell, though the project posed some
challenges and a steep learning curve, she was deeply fulfilled by the
experience.
Just a few short months later her short premiered at a small film
festival in the West Village, and she even won an award for best original
score, which she wrote and performed herself; notable accomplishments she could
not claim just a few weeks earlier.
I highlight my friend’s
story to illustrate how important and easy it is to create your own work these
days. The Internet, access to renting reasonably priced state of the art equipment,
and countless scriptwriting aids like Amazon Story Writer (free) and Final
Draft Pro make building your own momentum an absolute must for the modern day storyteller.
